Dr. Matthew Ashby is an Astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he has worked since earning his PhD in Astronomy from Cornell University, in 1995. His research has focused mainly on various aspects of infrared astronomy, and on infrared extragalactic surveys in particular, as well as efforts to better understand the main energy sources powering the prodigious luminosities of starburst galaxies. Dr. Ashby has been a member of Spitzer's IRAC instrument team since 1998. He has served in other roles also, including as a member of the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite operations team from 1995 to 2001. Quite memorably for him, he also participated in two projects as a University of Colorado undergraduate: first, leading up to and during the Voyager II flyby of Uranus in 1986, and second, as an experimenter with CU-Boulder's gravitational wave group at JILA. Dr. Ashby is currently co-director of NSF's Astronomy Research Experience for Undergraduates site at the Center for Astrophysics. He is also a Co-Investigator on SPHEREx, a NASA Medium Explorer mission.
